Women Asexual Visibility and Education (WAVE) is a grassroots organization that was established in 2020 by a group of five asexual women in Kenya. The organization aims to address the needs and challenges faced by asexual individuals, particularly women, who identify as lesbian, bisexual, transgender women, and gender non-conforming individuals.
“Ace is not a phase”
Mission: Our mission is to promote asexuality as a valid and positive sexual orientation by educating the public and providing a supportive community for asexual womn in Kenya. We aim to create safe spaces where asexual womn can share their experiences, learn from each other, and advocate for their rights.
Goal: Our goal is to raise awareness about asexuality and provide education and resources to womn in Kenya who identify as asexual or are questioning their sexuality.
Vision: We envision a world where asexual womn are fully understood and accepted for who they are, without fear of stigma, discrimination or violence.
WAVE has four main objectives that guide its activities:
One
They seek to build a supportive community for asexual individuals and their allies in Kenya. By fostering connections and providing a safe space, WAVE aims to create a sense of belonging and understanding among asexual individuals.
Two
WAVE aims to raise visibility and awareness about asexuality. Asexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by experiencing little or no sexual attraction. It is important to note that asexuality is not about behavior but rather about an individual’s internal feelings. By increasing visibility and promoting understanding, WAVE hopes to challenge misconceptions and reduce stigma surrounding asexuality.
Three
WAVE provides mental health support for asexual individuals. Recognizing that mental well-being is crucial, the organization offers resources, counseling, and a supportive network to help individuals navigate the challenges they may face due to their asexuality.
Four
WAVE strives to achieve recognition of asexuality as a legitimate sexual orientation. By advocating for inclusion, intersectionality, and social justice, the organization aims to promote understanding and acceptance of asexuality within society.
Our Commitment
WAVE is committed to welcoming members from diverse backgrounds, including individuals with different sexual orientations, gender identities, beliefs, socioeconomic statuses, and abilities. The organization recognizes the importance of inclusivity and aims to create a space where all individuals can feel valued and supported.
Overall, the mission of Women Asexual Visibility and Education (WAVE) is to raise awareness about the asexual spectrum, promote inclusivity and social justice, and provide a supportive community for asexual individuals and their allies in Kenya.
Community Guidelines
For Members:
We encourage healthy discussions and debates, even if they involve controversy or frustration. Moderators may intervene to prevent situations from escalating, but this does not mean users are in trouble.
It is strictly prohibited to personally insult other users. Respectful communication is essential within the community.
To respect the comfort levels of many users, we kindly request that posts containing sexually explicit material include a warning in the subject line. Please refrain from using sexually explicit subject lines altogether.
Posting personal information about another user without their explicit permission is a severe offense. Such posts will be deleted upon the request of the affected party. This rule also applies to sharing private messages and conversations.
We strongly discourage making judgments about other users, particularly regarding the validity of their asexuality. Our purpose here is to explore and understand ourselves, not to impose labels on each other.
For Researchers:
The WAVE Project Team oversees coordination with researchers interested in conducting studies on WAVE. If you are a researcher seeking to recruit participants through WAVE or utilize data from our social media platforms, please contact us via email at asexualkenya@gmail.com.
